ImageFolio Usage
Can I make ImageFolio look like my website? (Our #1 most FAQ)
You can make ImageFolio look exactly like your website and a lot easier than with any of our previous releases. There are no limitations to what you can do and everything about ImageFolio is optional and configurable. You have access to all of the HTML templates, images, Perl source code, etc. We are absolutely serious about this and have put a lot of effort into making it easier and less time consuming for you or your webmaster. If you can't do it yourself, and don't have a webmaster, you can always hire us to do it for you. See the Skins FAQ.

Some of the images I will be using in ImageFolio have IPTC embeded as metadata. Can Imagefolio extract that data as searchable keywords?
ImageFolio can read, write, display and search the IPTC data embedded in images created with any IPTC compliant product. You can also import keywords and other File Info added in Adobe Photoshop® and 140 or so other image editors and software products that are IPTC compliant. You can also decide which fields can be displayed and/or searched. ImageFolio also gives you the ability to use all of the standard IPTC fields plus over 20 custom records of data to each image. If you want, you can also rename any of the field names so they are displayed the way you want. You can modify all of the IPTC features with the browser-based Config Editor, and the IPTC data itself with ImageFolio's Add File Info feature.

I didn't see any information about having private galleries. Is this possible? Our clients prefer to have their Internet proofs password protected.
Yes, with our Multi-User Mod, which comes free with ImageFolio Commerce 4, you can set up groups and users with permission to access certain categories. You can then allow only certain users to access certain categories upon logging in. Other users will not see or be allowed to search within those protected categories.

I prefer to use FTP to upload my digital photos after a photoshoot. Can I and how would I do that instead of using your iBULC™ program?
Yes, you can use either FTP or iBULC™. So after you shoot your pictures, here is what you do, in a nutshell:
  1. Download the photos from your digital camera to your computer
  2. Connect to your web site using any FTP utility
  3. Navigate to ImageFolio's gallery directory and create a new directory (directories become categories in ImageFolio)
  4. Upload your photos to that new directory
  5. Open your browser to ImageFolio's administration area and log in
  6. Click on Batch Thumbnail
  7. Select the directory that you uploaded to and Batch Thumbnail it

Licensing/Pricing
I see that ImageFolio comes with a free 5 user iBULC™ license. What is that and what if I have more users than that?
iBULC™ (www.ibulc.com) is our batch upload utility that integrates with your computer and ImageFolio. It can be installed on your Microsoft Windows® (all versions) or Apple Macintosh® (OS X® only) desktop as client-side software. It is only required by those who are going to be uploading files into ImageFolio. The free 5 user license covers this for 5 individuals or employees that will be administering the website, but only if you have given those administrators upload permission. If you have more than 5 users that are going to be uploading, you need to purchase a license for additional users from our main Buy and Download page located at www.imagefolio.com/purchase.

The number of web users will be unknown, how does this affect the iBULC™ license?
If the users are not uploading, you don't need to buy a license for them. See above.

I would be the only user (as administrator for the server) that would upload. Are there any license or other fees based on users who download? I do not want users to be able to upload at all, only to browse, search and download.
There are no restrictions based on the number of users downloading -- it is unlimited. You may also have unlimited administrators and groups.

Can I install this on an Intranet?
Yes, you can. When you order from us, be sure to enter the network IP address of the server you are installing the software on. If it is accessible via the Internet then enter the Internet IP address. If it is only to be accessible on a local network, then enter the network IP address.

I was filling out your order form and it asks for the domain or IP address I am licensing and I don't have a domain name yet?
Just put "Don't Know Yet" on the checkout form. You can still purchase without knowing or owning a domain name.

What if my domain name or IP address changes and I need to modify the license for the new domain?
A Domain Name Transfer license is required in this scenario. Right before you change to the new domain name or IP address, purchase a Domain Name Transfer for $50 from our store page.

What happens if I try to install this on a different domain than the one I licensed?
The product won't run at all.

We usually purchase using purchase orders. Do you accept those?
We do accept purchase orders from universities, government agencies, and medium to large corporations. We do not accept purchase orders from individuals or small companies. If you are purchasing with a purchase order, call us in advance to let us know. You may also require our Federal and/or State ID Number, which we can provide to you over the phone or via email.

Server/Hosting
I have a Mac OS X® server, will ImageFolio run on that?
Absolutely. Mac OS X® is a great server for ImageFolio. We do all of our coding and testing on Mac OS X®.

We host on Windows®, is there anything special we need to do to get ImageFolio to work?
Nothing special at all, except to make sure permissions are set correctly on the two writable directories and that Perl is installed.

I'm on a Windows® server and Perl is not installed. What is Perl and how do I get it?
Perl is the programming language ImageFolio is written in, and to run ImageFolio, a Perl interpreter is required. Windows® servers do not have Perl installed by default, although most hosting companies have installed it for you. If it is not installed, ask your IT department or hosting company to install ActiveState Perl™, which is available from activestate.com for free. Download it, double click on the installer, click Next a bunch of times, and you are done.

Do I have to be on a dedicated server to use ImageFolio?
No you do not and most of our customers are not. But, if you have the budget, you should choose to use a dedicated server.

Do I have to host with you or can I choose my own host?
You may choose your own host. Our servers are geared for ImageFolio use, but the cost is not going to be less than the discount hosting companies.

I've selected a hosting company, but they offer a lot of different packages. What hosting package is best?
The best package is the one that fits your budget and still meets your personal requirements and ImageFolio's requirements. You need to figure out how many images/files you are going to be serving and then use a calculator to figure out how much storage space you need. Storage should be the primary factor. Secondary should be processor, memory, and operating system. The choice is simple, just get as much as you can afford.

My hosting company offers servers with Intel Celeron® or Intel Pentium® processors. Can I use Celeron®, it's much cheaper?
Celeron is a suitable processor for ImageFolio's requirements, however, Pentium is 3x to 5x faster under heavy loads.

What is required for an ImageFolio install on my server?
Perl 5.002 or greater, FTP or Shell Access, CGI capable (should already be if Perl is installed), adequate storage space.

Do I have to purchase installation?
If you have knowledge of installing Perl scripts and are familiar with FTP, don't order installation. The installation is very simple. If you don't have knowledge of Perl and FTP, you should definitely pay for installation.

I don't have root access to my server, do you need that if I order installation?
We only need FTP access for installation. We can also install via SecureFTP (SFTP) or via SSH or Telnet.

What operating system does ImageFolio run best on?
Without question, all Linux® and all Unix systems are faster and more secure. However, ImageFolio does run very well on Microsoft Windows®.

Which version of Linux® or Unix is best and why?
We prefer Red Hat Linux® because they provide the best support in the Linux® industry and they are always releasing patches and updates. On the Unix side, we prefer Mac OS X Server® because it is easy to use, fast, stable, and secure.

Skins/Templates
Can I create a CSS file for my skin?
Yes, you may create a CSS file for your skin. You may use a global CSS file, embedded CSS tags, or a combination of both.

Can I edit the HTML templates using Macromedia Dreamweaver® or Adobe GoLive®?
You may edit the templates via a WYSIWYG editor, such as Macromedia Dreamweaver® or Adobe GoLive®, or even Microsoft FrontPage®, but if you know HTML, use a text editor instead. You may also use the browser-based text editor in ImageFolio. Login to the Admin Area, click on Skins Manager, click edit next to the skin you want to edit, then click the Edit button next to Edit Templates, choose a template to Edit, and you are there.

Can I move the search box to the bottom and navigation buttons to the top center?
You can move everything around, not just the search box or navigation buttons. Experiment a little and you'll see what you can do.

When editing the images, do I have to do just GIF, or just PNG, or just JPEG images, or can I do a mix and match of file types?
It's your choice. You can mix and match file types. If you do change from one to another, be sure to denote the filename from within your ImageFolio4_files/skins/SKIN_NAME/config_skin.pl.

Am I limited to the number of images I can use?
You can add as many images as you want. You are not limited to any certain number of images.

Can I use background images on the pages or within the tables?
You may use background images thoughout your skin.

In Adobe Photoshop® I have options to Save As, Save, and Save for Web. Which one should I choose?
Always choose to Save for Web. The reason is, the normal Save or Save As functions will sometimes embed XML code into your images and make them bigger in file size. Larger file sizes load slower in a browser.

When I save the images as type GIF, I have a lot of options in Adobe Photoshop®. Which ones are best?
It's really up to you. We prefer to use type Adaptive with no Dither, 64 or 128 Colors, 0 Lossy, No Matte, O% Web Snap.

How do I save an image as a PNG in Adobe Photoshop®?
Go to File > Save for Web. In the Save for Web window, choose type PNG 24, which is the 24 bit image.
